In Stephen’s own words · Biography supplied by Binoman Africa Safaris
My Story
My name is Stephen M. Leah, a Kenyan-born tour guide, passionate birder, wildlife enthusiast, and conservationist with a deep love for Africa’s natural heritage.
I was born in the central region of Kenya, between the magnificent Aberdare Ranges and Mount Kenya, an area blessed with breathtaking landscapes, rich biodiversity, and incredible natural beauty.
Growing up in this beautiful part of Kenya inspired my love for nature, birds, and wildlife. The surrounding landscapes and diverse ecosystems helped shape my appreciation for the natural world and inspired my passion for conservation.
Since 2013, I have been working as a tour guide, sharing my knowledge of Kenya’s extraordinary wildlife, birdlife, landscapes, ecosystems, and natural heritage with visitors from around the world. My goal is to provide every guest with an authentic, informative, and memorable African safari experience.
Birdwatching and Bird Conservation
Birdwatching is one of my greatest passions. Kenya is home to an extraordinary diversity of birds, from the colourful residents of its forests to the magnificent species found in its savannahs, wetlands, lakes, and highlands.
I enjoy exploring Kenya’s diverse habitats, discovering remarkable bird species, observing their behaviour, and understanding the ecological relationships that make our natural world so fascinating.
I actively participate in bird counts and citizen-science birding activities that help document and celebrate Kenya’s avian diversity. I have also participated in Global Big Day, the international birding event that brings birdwatchers together to record as many bird species as possible around the world.
During Global Big Day 2025, I recorded 72 bird species, an achievement that reflects my dedication to birdwatching and my enthusiasm for documenting Kenya’s rich birdlife.
I am also proud to have ranked among the top 20 eBirders in Kenya. This recognition reflects my commitment to recording bird observations, exploring different habitats, and contributing valuable sightings to the birding community.
For me, birdwatching is more than identifying species. It is an opportunity to understand bird behaviour, appreciate ecological relationships, contribute to biodiversity knowledge, and inspire others to protect nature.
My Commitment to Conservation
My passion for nature extends beyond guiding. I believe that protecting wildlife and natural habitats is a shared responsibility, and that conservation begins with understanding and appreciating the natural world.
I am a conservationist and a member of Friends of Kinangop Plateau. I am also a member of Nature Kenya and a friend and member of the Kenya National Museums community.
These connections reflect my interest in biodiversity, habitat protection, environmental awareness, and the conservation of Kenya’s unique natural heritage.
I believe that understanding nature is the first step towards protecting it, and that every visitor can leave with a deeper appreciation of Africa’s natural treasures.
I am particularly passionate about Kenya’s birds and their habitats, and I believe responsible tourism can help visitors develop a deeper appreciation for conservation.
Wildlife Safaris and African Adventures
As a safari guide, I enjoy introducing visitors to Kenya’s extraordinary wildlife, from elephants and rhinos to lions, leopards, plains game, and the many smaller creatures that make African ecosystems so fascinating.
I believe every animal has a story worth sharing. My approach to guiding combines wildlife observation, interpretation, and an appreciation of the relationships between animals, their habitats, and the wider environment.
Whether guiding dedicated birdwatchers, wildlife photographers, nature enthusiasts, families, or first-time visitors to Africa, I aim to make every journey educational, enjoyable, memorable, and meaningful.
Whether we are searching for a special bird, observing elephants on the open plains, tracking big cats, or exploring the hidden wonders of a forest, every safari offers something new to discover.
Mobile Camping and Adventure
My experience also includes mobile camping safaris, an exciting way to explore Africa’s wilderness while staying close to nature.
These adventures offer opportunities to experience changing landscapes, discover remote destinations, observe wildlife in its natural habitat, and enjoy the atmosphere of Kenya’s wild places beyond the usual tourist routes.
I appreciate the spirit of adventure that comes with exploring remote destinations, discovering wildlife in its natural habitat, and experiencing the beauty of Africa beyond conventional tourist routes.
